 On the 31st of August in 2020, Ronald Merle McNutt, a 33-year-old American man, fatally shot himself under the chin during the Facebook livestream that became a viral hit on social media platforms. The incident was noteworthy because of the callousness displayed by people on the internet in regard to McNutt's passing, and also for the slow Facebook response to the video. The video had been posted on a variety of other platforms and amassed large views before it was taken down. TikTok, a video platform, was slow to respond to the video. It had been shared across a variety of feeds, and re-uploaded many times, prompting many users to decide to stop using the site. This case raised awareness about suicide prevention, and the duty of care social media platforms have to respond to users when they post images. A lot of users decided to stay away from TikTok due to the slow response time. McNutt worked at a Toyota plant near New Albany and lived a fairly stable lifestyle.
