The Summer Olympics featured a range of distances for race walking events. The 2020 Summer Olympics included three events that included a women's and a male's 20-kilometre walk as well as 50-kilometre walk. The events were run in a single-event format.The first men's races were held at the 1908 London Olympics, which featured 3500 m and 10-mile distances. In 1912, the Summer Olympics included a 10-kilometer version. It extended until 1952, with three editions in 1928 and 1936. There was also a one-off 3000 m run at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics. In 1956, the 20-kilometer run by men became the standard for short distances and has been in use ever since. The longer distance for men of 50 km was first introduced during the 1932 Summer Olympics and continues to be held every year until today, except for a brief elimination from the program in 1976.
