Truck stops are big business. Just look at Tom and Judy Love and their multi-billion dollar fortune. The Haslam family from Tennessee is also billionaires, thanks to their chain of truck stops, Pilot Flying J, which they sold to Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway in 2017 - making them another billionaire family with Warren Buffet to thank for large portions of their fortune. Jim Haslam, father of former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam founded the Pilot Corporation. Jim Haslam was a star football player at the University of Tennessee. In 1948, he was enrolled at UT. The Volunteers took home the national championship in 1951. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, and was a player on the O-line. He also placed second in the polls for the Heisman Trophy in his junior season. He joined the Army after he graduated from college, and was stationed in Korea during the period immediately following the Korean War. He then returned to Tennessee and was offered a position in Fleet Oil. After a few years and a half, he was appointed the CEO of the company's brand new Sail Oil chain of gas stations. Haslam left Sail in 1958 in order to begin his own company.
