Jonathan is an Seychelles giant tortoise, was born around. 1832. Jonathan is among numerous subspecies of Aldabra giant tortoises (AldabrachelysGigantea). Jonathan is also the longest-living land animal. Jonathan lives in Saint Helena, an British Overseas Territory situated in the South Atlantic Ocean. He was born in 1832, and was accompanied by three tortoises, all around 50 years old from Seychelles. He was named in the 1930s by the Governor of Saint Helena Sir Spencer Davis and has lived throughout the governor's terms of 31. He continues to live in the grounds of Plantation House, the official residence of the governor; he is cared for by the administration of Saint Helena. His age was estimated since the governor was "fully mature" when he was brought to Saint Helena in 1882. "Fully mature" means at minimum 50 years old which gives him the date for hatching no later than 1832. Jonathan's photo was initially believed to date dating to 1902, the actual date is from 1886. It was four years after his arrival in Saint Helena. Measurements taken from the photograph indicate that he was fully mature in 1886.
