Bettany

 Bettany Mary Hughes OBE FSA (born May 27, 1967) is an English historian, author and broadcaster, who specializes in the study of classical history. Her published books include mythology and classical antiquity and the story of Istanbul. She is involved in promoting the teaching of classics in UK state schools. Hughes was made an OBE in 2019.In 2010 she presented the Hellenic Institute's Tenth Annual lecture "Ta Erotika The Things of Love", and in 2011 gave the Royal Television Society's Huw Wheldon Memorial Lecture. In it, she claimed that the history of television is thriving and enjoying a new golden age. She was the chair of the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2011, which is the only annual award for stories written entirely by women. Hughes is a patron to The Iris Project which promotes the teaching of Latin as well as Greek in UK public schools. She is an Honorary Patron of Classics For All, a national initiative to bring classical languages and ancient civilisations into the state curriculum. She acts as an advisor to the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation, which seeks to promote large-scale collaboration projects between East and West.
