Benjamin

Imagine never being able touch your inheritance in the near future. In the 200th anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's death, April 1990 saw the birth of Philadelphia and Boston. Franklin left $2,000 sterling to the cities. There was just one catch that the remaining balance could not be utilized for 100 years and the rest could not be used for 200 years. The Franklin was born in Boston in 1706 and moved to Philadelphia when he turned 17. He left $2000 in his will to divide between Philadelphia as well as Boston. The money was intended to be used for loans to apprentices who were just starting out. He wanted to assist new tradesmen to get their foot on the line on the job market. Also, the amount of $2,000 was significant because this was the Franklin's pay when he was Governor of Pennsylvania between 1785 until 1788. "It was one of Franklin's most beloved ideas that he tried to include in the Constitution that public servants in a democracy should not be paid," said historian Whitfield Bell, who is the curator of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia.
