She was among four girls selected out of more than 1500 girls. Milano along with her mother were traveling as she worked on the show. Milano was in TV commercials, and she played a variety of roles in Off-Broadway productions. This included the American musical adaptation of Jane Eyre. While accompanying one of the cast members from the Annie production to the office of an New York agent, Milano was introduced to the agent, who started representing her.
